50 Years Ago

■Easthampton High School has won the Fay-Wright Division of the Western Massachusetts High School Hockey League. The Eagles defeated Holyoke, 4-1, last night to win the championship by two points over Longmeadow.

■A 34-day, 375-mile walk in protest of the war in Southeast Asia will come to an end today, as 21-year-old Debbie Peck, a University of Massachusetts student, is expected to arrive in Washington, D.C., this afternoon. “I’m feeling very well. I’m healthy and I’m happy,” commented Miss Peck this morning in a telephone interview.

■In a sweeping review of the University of Massachusetts system, state auditors found a number of financial problems at the Amherst campus. They range from more than $9 million in unauthorized or questionable tuition waivers for students, to excessive travel expenses for the men’s basketball team, a report concludes.

■Eric Suher is poised to purchase what is arguably his fiercest competitor in the downtown Northampton entertainment scene — the Pearl Street Night Club. Suher, who also owns the Iron Horse Music Hall and the Calvin Theater, signed a purchase-and-sale agreement yesterday afternoon with Carol Hyde, who has owned the club at 10 Pearl St. since 1983.

■A Chinese language charter school in Hadley will expand and add three more grades to become a K-12 institution following action Tuesday by the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. The board voted to allow the Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School to expand to 12th grade, and to increase the cap on the number of students from 300 to 584.

■Soldier On has landed $1.8 million in state housing subsidies to help it construct a permanent housing complex for homeless veterans on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs campus in Leeds. Soldier On intends to combine the money from the state Department of Housing and Community Development with $6.2 million from the VA to develop the 44-unit development.
