NORTHAMPTON — A 41-year-old Ware man was ordered held without the right to bail Friday after his arraignment in Northampton District Court on several assault charges related to a stabbing in which a woman was hospitalized.

Russell Scott Mayo is charged with armed assault to murder and five other criminal counts after he allegedly stabbed a woman several times in the neck, head, chest and arms with needle-nose pliers at Center and Masonic streets, outside the Northampton Police Department, just after 2 p.m. Thursday.

Police and others responded immediately to the attack. Northampton Police Capt. Victor Caputo said he heard the woman screaming through his closed office window.

“I looked out the window and I could see her falling, with this guy standing over her,” he said.

Officers ran out of the police station. Caputo said he and Detective Lauren Bolduc provided first aid to the victim, and passers-by tackled the assailant and held him down until officers were able to reach him. Sgt. Joseph Golec was the arresting officer.

“It was a team effort,” Caputo said.

The victim was treated for her injuries at the scene and then transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield for further treatment. She was reported to be in stable condition Thursday evening, having suffered 10 stab wounds to her head, neck, arms, hands, legs and back, according to a police report.

Besides the attempted murder charge, Mayo faces two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in violation of a protective order, assault on a family/household member, and violating an abuse-prevention order.

The police report stated that Mayo and the woman were in a previous dating relationship and have a child together, who was with the woman at the time of the assault.

In court Friday, Judge Jacklyn Connly ordered Mayo held pending his next court appearance Oct. 27.
