Conway’s Gunnar Moore in striking distance after Day 1 of Massachusetts Junior Amateur Championship at GreatHorse

Conway’s Gunnar Moore put himself in striking distance of match play after the first day of the 105th Massachusetts Junior Amateur Championship on Monday at GreatHorse.

The Frontier Regional graduate shot a 1-over 73 that tied him for 14th. The top 16 players after two days of stroke play will move on to match play later this week.

Moore, who also competed in the Massachusetts Amateur Championship two weeks ago, birdied the second, eighth, 14th and 16th holes. He’ll tee off from the 10th hole at 8:35 a.m. Tuesday.

Northampton’s Reilly Fowles fired a 3-over 75 that tied him for 32nd. After three bogeys and a double bogey on the front nine, he rebounded with two birdies on the back nine. Fowles will open from No. 10 on Tuesday at 12:45 p.m.

His older brother Galen Fowles carded a 78, which tied for 70th. He had one birdie on No. 16. His second orund will begin from the first tee at 1:20 p.m.

Amherst’s Piet Hartman is tied for 79th after a 7-over 80. He birdied No. 2 after a bogey on the first hole and added a second birdie on the back nine. Hartman will tee off at 9:05 a.m. Tuesday from the 10th hole.

Michael Murray of Belchertown shot an 8-over80, tied for 85th. He birdied No. 7. Murray will be among the final golfers on the course Tesday teeing off from No. 1 at 2 p.m.

Sascha Robinson, playing out of Plymouth Country Club, leads the field after one round with a 7-under 65. Longmeadow’s Ryan Downes, who became the youngeste ever Massachusetts Amateur Champion this summer, is tied for fourth (-3).
