High schools: Northampton’s Norah Reade captures 2 event wins at PVIAC Indoor Track Meet No. 6

Norah Reade’s distance performance powered the Northampton girls’ indoor track and field team, as the Hampshire County contingent once again shined during PVIAC Meet No. 6 on Sunday at Smith College in Northampton.
Reade finished first in the 2-mile (11:57.01) and 1,000 meters (3:20.57) for the Blue Devils. Teammate Allie Sullivan also took first in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet even.
Amherst’s April Schilling rounded out the individual winners on the girls’ side, as she bested the field in the 1-mile with a time of 5:46.13.

Two Amherst and two Northampton athletes took home individual victories to pace the boys’ event on Sunday.
Amherst’s David Pinero-Jacome captured the win in the 600 meters (1:26.66), and teammate Logan Alfandari won the shot put with a heave of 47 feet, 1.5 inches.
Northampton’s Jack Kamins cruised to a comfortable win in the 1,000 meters (2:52.10), while Rowan Hodgson made it two Blue Devils atop the podium with a victory in the 55-meter dash (6.85).
Holyoke’s Elijah Quinn rounded out the local winners, as he bested the field in the 1-mile with a time of 4:47.17.

Hurricanes, Warriors compete in third meet
Despite a lack of snow this winter, the Mohawk Trail Nordic ski team was able to host its first meet of the high school season and third overall on Saturday in Buckland.
The event also included teams from Mt. Greylock, Wahconah, Lenox, Amherst, Simbsury and Hoosac Valley.
Mohawk Trail’s Augustus Niswonger, who attends Hampshire Regional, was the top skier for the host school on Saturday, finishing 14th overall in the boys’ race with a time of 16 minutes, 54 seconds. That helped the Warriors to a fourth-place team showing with 76 points. Mount Greylock won the boys’ race (11 points), followed by Wahconah (30) and Lenox (66). Amherst took fifth place (98 points).
Rounding out the top five finishers for the Warriors on the boys’ side were Vincent Gauthier (17th, 17:09), Oscar Schiff (28th, 18:05), Curtis Casey (30th, 18:07) and Emmett Johnson (31st, 19:01).
Amherst’s Julian Camera was 18th overall in 17:16, followed by teammates Ian Burns (31st, 19:01) and Max Rogowski (33rd, 19:11).
On the girls’ side, Mohawk Trail’s Charlotte Niswonger, who attends Hampshire Regional, finished 2oth to pace the Warriors (22:34). Mohawk Trail was fifth as a team with 100 points. Greylock (18), Wahconah (31), Lenox (43) and Amherst (46) were the top four scoring squads.
Mohawk Trail’s Corinne Somes (25th, 23:02), Anya Read (26th, 23:15), Ada Comer (35th, 25:26) and Sadie Mahon-Moore (36th, 26:29) rounded out the Warriors’ top five finishers.
Amherst’s Zoey Candito took eighth overall in 19:12, while teammates Elizabeth Sawicki (10th, 20:12), River Wolaver (13th, 21:04) and Isla Cusick (15th, 21:19) all finished inside the top 15.
Eleven different players contributed to the offensive effort as the Williston Northampton girls hockey team took down Hotchkiss, 11-0, in action on Saturday.
Goalies Jenna Guglielmi and Liv Ferebee combined for the shutout.
Elsewhere, Paul Ippolito scored 22 points to help the Wildcats capture a 67-54 win over Hotchkiss in boys basketball action. Grgur Brcic and Ricardo Nieves also paced Williston.
The boys swimming team defeated Kingswood-Oxford, 95-81, with double event wins from Jack Coscia, Herrick Stevenson and Getchell Gibbons. The girls swim team also beat KO, 96-78, as double event wins were recorded by Katya Krasnovskaya (200 IM, 100 back) and Campbell Collins (50 free, 500 free).
The boys squash team dropped a pair to Pomfret (6-1) and Loomis (7-0). Peter Wang earned the game ball for his victory against Pomfret.
In tri-match, girls varsity squash loses to Canterbury and Kent, 7-1 and 7-0, respectively. Betsy Gaudreau won a tightly-contested match 11-9, 11-9, 12-10.
