Indoor track: Emma Sanford, Abigail Gelinas lift South Hadley in another big PVIAC meet

Three event wins from Emma Sanford and two from Abigail Gelinas made for yet another successful weekend for the South Hadley girls indoor track and field team.

Sanford took first place in the high jump, long jump and 55-meter hurdles, and Gelinas nabbed winning times in the 55 dash and 300 as the Tigers paced the pack in the late session at PVIAC Indoor Track Meet No. 5 at Smith College in Northampton on Sunday.

Sanford and Gelinas went 1-2 in the long jump, where Sanford won the event with a time of 16 feet, 4½ inches and Gelinas was next in 15-8½. Holyoke’s Veronica Colon finished fifth in the event (14-1¼). 

Sanford’s top leap of 5-2 bested the field in the high jump, while Holyoke’s Francesca Crescentini took fourth (4-5) and South Hadley’s Gwen Marion was fifth (4-3).

Sanford closed out her wins with a top time in the 55-meter hurdles (8.75 seconds).

Gelinas won the 55 meters (7.63) and 300 (45.44), while South Hadley teammate Izzy Scott (6:04.04) captured the 1-mile and Rachel Yabra (1:51.26) took first in the 600. Scott was also third in the 1,000 (3:31.41).

Other top five finishers in the girls late session included South Hadley’s Emma Levreault (third in shot put, third in 300), Lexie Scott (fifth in shot put) and Gwen Marion (fifth in 600).

Colon crossed fourth in the 55 meters (7.89).

On the boys side, Holyoke’s Jaden Diaz was the runner-up in the shot put (36-8¾), while teammate Elijah Quinn finished second in the 1-mile (4:49.90).

Holyoke’s Pablo Tapion finished top five in the 1-mile (fourth, 5:21.26) and 1,000 meters (fifth, 3:15.05).

Nathenal Mcmains of South Hadley nabbed fifth in the 1-mile (5:28.37), while Holyoke’s Ryan Kennedy nabbed third in the 600 (1:38.37) and Gavin Sullivan was fourth in the 300 (41.73).  

Early meet results

Hampshire Regional’s Tim Cahill captured first place in the 1,000 meters, lifting the Raiders during the early portion of the meet on Sunday at Smith College.

Cahill crossed the line first overall in 2 minutes, 55.44 seconds.

Hampshire fared well in the distance events on Sunday. Junior Gavin DaFonte was the runner-up in the 2-mile (10:54.78), followed by teammate Zach Jones in fourth place (11:03.74).

Nick Brisson was also second overall in the 1-mile for Hampshire, posting a time of 5:04.73, while Spencer Reese nabbed fifth in the 600 meters (1:34.38).  

On the girls side, freshman Keegan Butler ran to a third-place showing in the 2-mile (13:25.94). Junior Ava Gaida took third in the 55-meter hurdles (10.22 seconds).

Williston results

Skyler Walker scored 20 points, and Kristen Trembley added seven for the Williston girls basketball team in a 55-36 loss to undefeated Hotchkiss on Saturday.

Elsewhere, the girls squash team dropped a 7-0 decision at Hopkins despite Olivia Zaiken and Louisa Coughlin both taking their opponents to four games.

The powerhouse girls hockey team rolled past Kent School, 5-1, thanks to goals from Violet Carroll, Nora Curtis, Camille Armaganian, Keirstyn Camiolo and Monique Lyons. Liv Ferebee was outstanding in net.

The girls swimming and diving team defeated Kent, 95-87, with great swims by Gabi Bobiak, Andie Kinstle and Lucy Hoyt.

The boys swimming and diving team won at Kent School, 95-66. Herrick Stevenson and Getchell Gibbons won two events each, and Cole Cavanagh and Luke Grabowski were strong on the diving boards.

The boys varsity basketball team fell to Avon Old Farms, 62-52. Paul Ippolito led the way with 20.
