EAST LONGMEADOW — A 49-year-old Hadley woman was seriously injured around 3 p.m. Monday when a tree fell on her while she was standing outside a car at 157 Smith Ave. in East Longmeadow.

She was unconscious when police arrived, Sgt. Daniel Manley said, and she had a large laceration. She was transported to the hospital, and as of Tuesday afternoon, police could not give an update on her condition.

The tree was rotting from the inside, Manley said, and the rain on Monday may have contributed to its fall, though the cause is still under investigation.

The falling tree also damaged two parked cars, he said, but it did not disrupt traffic much because Smith Avenue is a relatively small neighborhood street.

The tree was cleared Monday.
