AMHERST — Girls will have the opportunity to try a variety of sports and games as Amherst College’s female athletes help lead a regional celebration for the Women’s Sports Foundation’s National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Saturday.

Running from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Alumni Gymnasium, 266 South Pleasant St., student athletes from the college’s women’s sports teams, including squash, basketball, softball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, field hockey, lacrosse, golf, cross country and track & field will be leading the program for girls in grades 4 to 6. The event is being put together by Amherst College Athletics, the town of Amherst and the town’s Recreation Department and is part of the eight days of WinterFest.

The program kicks off in Middleton Gymnasium at 10 a.m. with a warm welcome and introduction by Dr. Emily Jones, the college’s director of student health services, and Jennifer Chuks, the associate director of athletics for diversity, equity and inclusion.

Sydni Spencer, assistant to the director of athletics for leadership and diversity, equity, and inclusion at the college, will then lead a group warmup session, before girls are divided into teams so they can try different sports and games.

Parents and guardians will be asked to stay on site for the duration of the program, having an opportunity to attend presentations by a college nutritionist and receive details about local sports and fitness organizations. In addition, refreshments will be provided.
