CHICOPEE — A 35-year-old man was killed in a car-to-car shooting on Interstate 391 south in Chicopee Tuesday evening, state police reported.

Troopers from the Springfield barracks responded to the scene after receiving a report of the shooting around 8:45 p.m. and learned that two victims from one of the vehicles had gone to Baystate Medical Center on their own.

One of the victims was rushed into surgery but did not survive. State police detectives interviewed the three other occupants of the vehicle, the surviving victim and two others who were not injured.

Police said the victims’ sport utility vehicle was southbound on I-391 near the 2.6-mile marker when another vehicle pulled up along the driver’s side and fired into the victims’ vehicle. The occupants of the SUV stopped to try to flag help, but when no passing vehicles stopped, they drove themselves to the hospital.

The investigation is being led by the State Police Detective Unit for Hampden County. Members of the State Police Crime Scene Services Section and Firearm Identification Section responded to the shooting scene, where they documented and recovered evidence from the roadway. Springfield police also responded to the hospital after the victims’ arrival there and provided assistance to state police investigators.
