50 Years Ago

■Fifteen deaf youngsters age 12 and 13 form the new Safety Patrol organized at The Clarke School for the Deaf by Inspector Edward A. Breor of the Registry of Motor Vehicles, Northampton Office. The group, senior students in the Middle School, will be responsible for the safety of 60 other deaf children who cross Round Hill Road at several locations.

■The City Planning Board has expressed tentative agreement with a Monday night Citizens Advisory Committee endorsement of the hiring of a full-time city planner for Northampton. Officials say that a planner soon will be needed to put the new updated master plan for the city of Northampton into effect.

25 Years Ago

■Eric Newton of Northampton has been promoted to accounting department manager at the Pro Corp in Florence. He joined the firm as a senior accountant four years ago. He was previously managing accountant at C.T. Male Associates in Greenfield.

■Adding fluoride to Northampton’s drinking water, a proposal beaten back 20 years ago, will get another airing by the Board of Health. The board last night approved a plan to hold a hearing in November to gather views from city residents on using the chemical compound to fight tooth decay.
