One year ago, Northampton High School’s newly hired Dave Grout directed the musical “Rock Of Ages.” On opening night, he made a tear-filled speech about his 10-plus-year search for a high school theater job. Alongside music director Susan Dillard, it seemed like they would co-lead Northampton High School’s musicals for decades.

Six months ago, Dave asked me if I was auditioning for the coming fall play. I didn’t think I was a great actor, so I declined. His response? “I’ll see you at auditions tomorrow!” Convinced by his enthusiasm, I caved in. I received a lead role. The play ended up being one of the highlights of my high school experience.

Three weeks ago, NHS’ winter musical “Freaky Friday” commenced. It was a huge success, and even sold out in the 709-seat auditorium for the Friday night show. Dave spent every waking hour at NHS in the weeks leading up working on the show, from programming the 275 light sequences to making sure every scene was blocked perfectly.

Two days ago, Dave was informed that his job will be partially or fully cut next year. Dave has always done whatever he can to meet his students’ needs and to advance the arts at NHS. It’s time the district does the same for him, and the thousands of students that will participate in the theater program in the years to come.
