Susan Donaldson: Massachusetts needs more sunshine

Sunday was daylight saving time — a good day to think about sunshine. It’s also Sunshine Week, a national week that highlights the importance of public records and government transparency.

In Massachusetts, the sun is not exactly shining. Gov. Maura Healey has walked back her commitment to comply with the state’s Public Records Law, and the Legislature shot down an amendment to make committee votes public. Massachusetts has one of the least transparent legislatures in the country, and is the only state where the Legislature, the Judiciary and the Governor’s Office are exempt from the Public Records Law.

Do we really want our government to be so secretive? We all need to call our state senators and encourage them to vote for S 1963, The Sunshine Act.
