I subscribe to the Daily Hampshire Gazette for various reasons. Mostly because it keeps me informed of local western Massachusetts news and events.

Your paper and writers excel on their writing and research. Reading the paper recently, I was happy to see reporter Chris Larabee’s article on Deerfield [“The night that changed Deerfield forever,” Gazette, March 1]. Over the weekend visiting my favorite Barnes & Noble in Enfield, Connecticut, I came across an end cap featuring “The Deerfield Massacre.” Being curious, I glanced at the book, bought it and am enjoying reading it.

This book is a great read. It is well-researched providing an extensive bibliography. My compliment is to the Gazette and Larabee for highlighting many of the treasures we have here in western Massachusetts. Old Deerfield Village being a perfect example that represents not only this area’s history, but is a tribute to hard work, perseverance, loyalty, community, and commitment to the persons that reside in and support the western side of Massachusetts in yesteryear and today.
