Only two players in Major League Baseball history (1871 - 2023) started games at shortstop and games at pitcher in their careers. Both players were from the Connecticut River Valley. One did it in the same season for the Red Sox. Westfield resident Adonis Terry started 406 games in the Majors at pitcher and started 12 games at shortstop for the Brooklyn Bridegrooms NL and American Association; Chicago Cubs NL, Pittsburgh Pirates NL. Holyoke resident Joe Lucey in 1925 made two starts at pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, on April 21 versus the White Sox at Comiskey Park and on June 2 versus the Philadelphia A’s at Fenway. In 1925, Lucey also started at shortstop for the Red Sox on June 23, 24 and 25, all versus the Philadelphia A’s at Connie Mack Stadium.
