M. Francisco Palomo’s letter to the editor of Oct. 16] “Demonstration to demilitarize counterproductive”] quotes the 4th century Roman Publius Vegetius Renatus as writing, “Therefore let him who desires peace prepare for war.”

Contrast this to Albert Einstein’s 1946 letter to U.S. Rep. Robert Hale: “One cannot simultaneously prevent and prepare for war.”
