Elaine Beaudoin: Main Street redesign neglects handicapped and elderly

As the Main Street redesign letters continue to appear in the Gazette, I rarely see any concerns about the lack of parking spaces that can accommodate handicapped and elderly people. There may be a few designated handicapped spots but how about for someone who must use a side door ramp with a motorized wheelchair? Being handicapped or elderly should not relegate people to either staying home or only patronizing restaurants and stores that do provide better parking for them. I have spoken with “decision makers” in both Northampton and Easthampton and they showed little understanding of these concerns. The elderly and handicapped communities are becoming a larger group in society and there should be more than one or two representatives on decision-making committees.
