Bob Bateman: Do not forget the Vietnam experience

Today in History this past Wednesday: “The last US combat troops left South Vietnam.” I was there. I remember visiting a Marine buddy at his barracks. He said, “Man, you’re staying? You’re crazy! Here, take this, you’re gonna need it.” He handed me a captured AK-47.

That was 50 years ago, I was 23. Through various transitions of government authority and oversight, my value was deemed relevant for an additional 14 months. It was difficult coming home and there’s been a lot to unpack since. The necessity of war, weapons, youth and trust. At different stages I’ve embraced and rejected each. Life can be both complicated and simple. My experience with these things continues to evolve.

Let’s try to remember, soldiers who served in Vietnam were once young, enthusiastic and trusting. Above all, let’s not forget. Fifty years!
