Betty Ussach-Schwartz: Trump and his loyal supporters

Will Trump regain the presidency, while under criminal indictment like Netanyahu? The more lies uncovered, treasonous actions performed and the closer to indictment Trump becomes, his diehard supporters remain loyal and supportive of a second presidency. Clearly the numbers of MAGA millions have diminished but the remaining rally and conference attendees bolster Trump, and each other, sufficiently to believe he has a realistic chance to make a comeback. And no doubt, as his one-time buddy Netanyahu won re-election in Israel despite being indicted and allying himself with the most far right politicians, Trump envisions a similar victorious return to the White House.

Trump has yet to be indicted for all his seemingly lawless and unconstitutional actions, but he has factored that possibility into his calculations and strategy. He will weave any such indictments into his narrative and engage his supporters by telling them they are the real victims of these governmental officials who are trying to take away their cherished freedom and liberty. Hypocrisy and inconsistency, the hallmarks of Trump’s life and campaign rhetoric, will never be acknowledged by his ardent supporters as their loyalty is a constant opportunity to infuriate anyone they perceive to be disdainful and dismissive of them.

Trump’s inventive nicknames, and insults hurled at all who challenge or criticize him will energize the MAGA crowds. They want to be entertained and their grievances vindicated, if only as campaign fodder. The king can do no wrong and his word is gospel. For those who rejoiced when Biden won are now justifiably worried that Trump will earn a new moniker as the comeback kid . If Trump succeeds, will Majorie Taylor Greene’s preposterous call for a national divorce seem more enticing to the Democrats and the only salvation for our constitutional democracy? So many seemingly incredible political slogans have become a reality, and no published revelations will dissuade the millions who will vote against their self interest to elevate a narcissistic, greedy grifter who will destroy the remaining constitutional protections of our democracy if he is re-elected.
