Jon Sass: The data clear on gun laws

In response to William Aherin’s letter about gun violence (“New gun laws won’t fix the problem,” June 11), I take issue with his dismissal of the statistics around gun laws. As a retired statistics teacher, I know people do not always accept the data. But we have had an unfortunate experiment in this country about whether gun control laws work as many states have enacted broad gun control laws while others have not. The data is clear: States with stricter gun control laws have far fewer mass shootings and other gun related deaths than states that do not.

Of course, there are other factors involved and gun laws in themselves will not solve the problems we face, but they are not to be dismissed out of hand as he and others have done.
