HADLEY — A customer who left the Target store at Hampshire Mall without paying for more than $700 worth of Lego sets on Saturday afternoon, before driving erratically from the Route 9 location, has been identified, Hadley Police said.

Police Lt. Mitchell Kuc said Monday that the 55-year-old Springfield man, whose name is not yet being released, is being charged with larceny under $1,200 following the incident, reported at 3:32 p.m.

The man was identified after a Hadley Police detective recognized him from photos taken by passers-by in the mall parking lot. Those bystanders saw the man pushing a shopping carriage filled with the items that still had their attached security wrapping, Kuc said, and they observed the man enter a black Jeep.

When Police Sgt. Daniel Phillips and Officer Brianna Riossi go to the mall, the Jeep took off heading south on South Maple Street, passing other vehicles in a no-passing zone. Hadley Police cut off the pursuit due to the man’s already dangerous driving, Kuc said.

In addition to Phillips and Rossi, the department is crediting Officer Jacob Laughlin, the emergency dispatching staff and neighboring law enforcement agencies, that assisted with trying to stop the man’s vehicle.
