NORTHAMPTON — A section of King Street across from the former Sakura Buffet restaurant was shut down for more than 12 hours Monday night into early Tuesday morning after a tractor trailer truck hit an overhead electrical wire late Monday afternoon.

According to Northampton Police, the tractor trailer was pulling out of 261 King St. at 4:20 p.m. near the supermarket when it struck the wire, causing several other power lines and a telephone pole to come undone. The resulting situation caused the street to be closed, with traffic being rerouted into the Stop and Shop parking lot to turn around.

National Grid and the city’s Water Department worked to clear the area. Police posted on its Facebook page that the road was open for traffic at around 5 a.m. Tuesday, more than 12 hours after the original incident.
