High schools: Sofia Holden, Amherst hold off Pope Francis in Tri-County League showdown (PHOTOS)

AMHERST – Catcher Maria Konieczny collected three hits including a double and an RBI, as the Amherst Regional softball team held off Pope Francis 4-2 on Tuesday.

The Hurricanes (14-1, 11-0 Tri-County) scored three runs in the first inning and added an insurance run in the sixth.

Amherst pitcher Sofia Holden struck out 12, allowing just two hits and two walks. She also scored a run and walked twice.

Stephanie Barton, Riana Shaw (double) and Eve Jacoby also added an RBI each for the Hurricanes.

Pope Francis pulled two back in the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate, but Holden ended the game with a strikeout.

Easthampton 14, Chicopee Comp 1 (5) – The Eagles scored seven times in the top of the first inning and cruised to a run-ruled victory on Tuesday in Chicopee.

Ana Growhowski was 3-for-4 to pace the Easthampton offense, while Jess Cloutier tripled twice and drove in three runs. Abby McClaflin and Christine Raymond each had two hits and combined for five RBIs, while pitcher Sophia Faginski struck out five in five innings, scattering five hits with no walks.

Baseball

McCann Tech 9, Smith Voc 2 (11) – The visiting Hornets scored seven times in the top of the 11th inning, breaking things open and handing the Vikings their first loss of the season on Tuesday in Northampton.

Summer on Strong kicks off Wednesday in Northampton

The game was scoreless into the 10th inning, as Smith Voc starter James Lavallee kept McCann Tech off the board in a pitcher’s duel. The visitors took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 10th, but the Vikings battled back when Jared Baer walked and scored a run and Rosco Palmer singled with two outs and scored the tying run to send things to the 11th.

Lavallee, who also had a hit in the 10th, struck out 12 in 7 2/3 innings of work on the mound in a standout performance for Smith Voc.

Girls lacrosse

Amherst 19, Chicopee 2 – Amherst goaltender Cedar Conrad had a night for the history books, making her 500th career save in Amherst’s win over Chicopee. 

Conrad made eight saves total and Talia Sadiq led the offense with five goals and two assists. Francesca Sloan and April Schilling both netted hat tricks and Schilling dished out an assist as well.

Hoosac 15, Hampshire 14 – Mary Thibault netted four goals and Sam Moran scored a hat trick, but the Raiders couldn’t slow Hoosac, which came back from a three-goal deficit to secure a win in Cheshire. 

Goalie Abby Hennessy made a dozen saves and Erin Miller and Rylie Simmons each netted a couple of goals apiece. 

Westfield 15, Northampton 5 – Eloise Ruberti netted a pair of goals and goalie Riley Shea made five saves for Northampton. 

Ally Busone picked up a goal and an assist and Teagan McDonald and Mia Jones also scored in the loss. 

Boys Lacrosse

Westfield 18, South Hadley 8 – Charlie Anischik led the Tigers with three points (2G, 1A) and Owen Dawson and Avery Haber added two goals each for South Hadley. 

Boys tennis

Northampton 5, Agawam 0 – Max Cahillane was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at No. 1 singles as the Blue Devils didn’t drop a set in Tuesday’s win.

Maitreya Abend (6-0, 6-0) and Reed O’Connor (6-1, 6-0) were victorious at Nos. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, while Aidan and Ethan Metz notched a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles and the pairing of Durrell Patrick and Reilly Fowles snagged a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2.

Girls tennis

PVCICS 5, SICS 0 – The Dragons improved to 12-2 on the season, as Nina Zorzi scored a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles to complete a 5-0 sweep at Forest Park in Springfield.

Elisa Shinn was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at first singles, and Christina Heiney notched a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 2.

At first doubles, Avery Richards and Biya Chaudhry also scored a 6-0, 6-0 win, and at second doubles, Chelsea Chartier and Sabine Loinaz turned in a 6-3, 6-1 victory.

Belchertown 4, West Springfield 1 – Ava Shea set the tone at No. 1 singles, where she notched a 6-0, 6-1 win to propel the Orioles to a victory on Tuesday.

Amber Drummond held on for a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) victory in the No. 2 spot, while Belchertown swept the doubles points. Kasey Gibbons and Amanda Murray were 6-4, 6-2 winners at No. 1, and Bella Cebula and Ellie Gelinas earned a 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 2.

Boys volleyball

East Longmeadow 3, Belchertown 2 – The Orioles dropped a five-set heartbreaker (22-25, 25-22, 25-23, 22-25, 8-15) on Tuesday. 

Setter Rainer Kristensen tossed up 43 assists and Connor White led the offense with 27 kills and added five blocks. Brian Burns added 12 kills for Belchertown.

Williston results

The Williston water polo team earned a convincing 17-1 win over visiting Choate over the weekend. Scorers for the Wildcats included Campbell Collins (5), Maisie Mattocks (3), Kaitlyn Williams (3), Caledonia McKeon (3), Hayden Hedstrom, Isabella Gargamelli and Andie Kinstle. Juno Aselton was terrific in net with eight saves.

The Wildcats capped their regular season at 15-0 in NEPSAC play with a 15-5 win over Loomis Chaffee. Collins (3), Mattocks (3) Williams (3), Hedstrom (2), Abby Muscato (2), Gargamelli and Aselton all tallied, and Aselton made 15 saves in net.

Elsewhere, the varsity baseball team fell to Cheshire, 11-0. Colin Larson, Nolan Puglisi, Hudson Fulcher-Melendy, and Quinn McDonald all had hits for Williston.

In other action, the boys track and field team earned four wins over the weekend to cap an undefeated regular season. The Wildcats notched victories over Cushing, Eaglebrook, St. Paul’s and Worcester.

The girls track and field team nabbed two victories, taking down Cushing and Worcester.

The girls varsity lacrosse team snagged an 18-2 win over Kingswood-Oxford on Senior Day. Goals were scored by all six seniors: Louisa Coughlin, Emily Crovo, Ava DeCoste, Katherine Kang, Izzy Ireland and Miranda Calderone.

Eric Carter and Brayden Deschamps were co-match medalists with rounds of 38 to propel the boys golf team to wins over Pomfret and Worcester at Ledges Golf Course in South Hadley. Brady Clark shot 39 for the Wildcats.

The girls tennis team won several close matches en route to a 7-0 sweep of Miss Hall’s School. The match of the day went to captain Elsa Frankel, who scored a 7-6, 7-5 win at No. 4 singles.

Elsewhere, Maggie Fay struck out five in a complete-game shutout, helping the softball team to a 1-0 win over Kingswood-Oxford. Violet Carroll doubled, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Jenna Guglielmi and scored on a passed ball to account for the game’s only run.

The boys tennis team dropped the second leg of a doubleheader to WMA, 7-0. Zach Pincus and Kei Imai played well for the Cats.
