HADLEY — The Hopkins Academy softball team punched a ticket to its first-ever Western Mass. final in style on Friday afternoon, run-ruling No. 6 Lenox in the Class D semifinals.

The Golden Hawks cruised to a 14-2 win in five innings backed by strong defense and a late offensive surge to put the game out of reach. That might have been helped in part by a challenge from Hopkins head coach Paula Cristoforo, who told her team that if they scored 10 runs in the fifth inning, she’d shave her head. They only got seven, but she did tell them that she’d cut her long blonde hair if they plated five runs, and she’ll stay true to her word.

“I knew that when they came at warmups, we were ready,” Cristoforo said. “Sometimes you just get a feeling inside of you and you just feel like they're ready.”

Izzy Palmisano and Daisy Venditti both singled and scored in the first inning to get two runs on the board for the Golden Hawks, but Hopkins was only able to get a run in each of the next two innings. Leading 4-0, Lenox started to make a push in the fourth inning, scoring twice and forcing a pitching change. Hopkins starter Kaelyn Zakaitis was replaced by eighth-grader Cassie Dion, who closed the game out.

“Coming in in the middle of the game and being able to throw, for an eighth-grade girl she has such great composure on the mound. She doesn't let anything shake her or rattle her,” Cristoforo said. “I'm always proud of all my girls, but in particular a shout out to Cassie for great pitching.”

Palmisano finished with two hits and three runs, Venditti had two hits, including a double, and two runs, and Cassidi Mushenski, Maggie Potter and Lily Ellia all scored twice in the win.

The Golden Hawks will face a tough opponent in the final – Turners Falls, a perpetual softball powerhouse. The two teams went toe-to-toe at the beginning of the season, a matchup that the Golden Hawks won, 17-3. They expect a closer game this time around, but will be ready.

“It's just a matter of going out there and everybody believing that we can beat them,” Cristoforo said. “Their pitcher is wonderful, Turners is an amazing team. To go against a team like that, it's really just an honor for us to be able to be on the same field with them and play with them again in Western Mass.”
