Firefighters quickly extinguished an early-morning garage fire Monday and prevented the blaze from spreading to the nearby home, Fire Chief David Hewes said.

A neighbor of the Ireland Street home saw flames and woke up the residents around 5:30 a.m. Firefighters were able to knock down the fire but were unable to save the structure or its contents, including a vehicle, power equipment and a workshop. The home, 20 feet from the garage, sustained only a little scorched siding, Hewes said.

The fire marshal is investigating the cause, which Hewes said was electrical.

Mutual aid was provided by Williamsburg, Goshen, Cummington and Worthington, with support from Plainfield and Huntington.
