State’s COVID-19 deaths top 3,000

NORTHAMPTON — The Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported 1,524 new cases of confirmed COVID-19 infections on Monday and 104 new deaths. There are now 56,462 total cases statewide and 3,003 deaths.

Overall, 7% of current cases in Massachusetts require hospitalization.

The state has reported 443 cases and 26 deaths in Hampshire County, 231 cases and 33 deaths in Franklin County and 3,381 cases and 337 deaths in Hampden County. Among confirmed cases, the average age of death is 82 and the average age of hospitalization is 69.

Also Monday, state health officials reported that another veteran resident had died of COVID-19 at the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke amid the coronavirus outbreak at the facility. Since late March, 77 veteran residents have died, including 66 who tested positive for COVID-19. Another 83 veteran residents and 81 employees at the Soldiers’ Home have also tested positive.

Area hospitals

Cooley Dickinson Hospital is treating 10 inpatients with confirmed COVID-19 infection as of Monday, three of whom are in the intensive care unit.

An additional 38 outpatients are under investigation for COVID-19 infection. The hospital has had 377 people test positive overall.

Baystate Health is treating 126 inpatients for confirmed COVID-19 infection across all of its hospitals, including 16 patients in critical care units. Of those hospitalized, 117 are at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. Twenty-six inpatients are under investigation for COVID-19 infection.

Baystate has tested 5,356 people to date, with 1,021 results coming back positive, 4,284 negative, and 51 pending results.

The hospital expects the percentage of positive cases to continue to decline as testing becomes increasingly available, according to hospital spokeswoman Shelly Hazlett. So far, the percentage of those testing positive at Baystate has decreased from 24% to 19% since the pandemic started.
