AMHERST — A yearly community breakfast that denotes the beginning of a new school year at the University of Massachusetts and celebrates the university’s relationship with officials and business leaders in area cities and towns takes place Tuesday morning.

Jointly sponsored by UMass and the Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce, the 53rd annual breakfast, to be held at 7:30 a.m. in the auditorium in the Campus Center, offers a chance for community and campus leaders to meet newcomers, renew friendships and discuss plans for the upcoming year.

UMass Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy, John Page, the chamber’s marketing and membership manager and a UMass student will be among the speakers.

In past years, the event, which is open to the public, has been mostly lighthearted, but also has been used as a time to make announcements about more serious matters, such as in 2017 when Subbaswamy launched the “hate has no home at UMass” campaign, and in 2016 when he told the community a party registration program for off-campus students would begin.

The auditorium is a new location for the breakfast. The traditional site, the Student Union Ballroom, is not available as the 1957 building is undergoing a $62 million renovation.

Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. Free parking is available in the Campus Center Garage.
