Lauren Bonavita’s 82nd-minute tally was too late as third-seeded UMass dropped a 2-1 match to No. 2 George Washington in the Atlantic 10 Women’s Soccer Tournament semifinals, Friday in St. Louis.

The Colonials scored less than two minutes into the second half after dominating possession and chances in the first half. The Minutewomen (10-6-3) almost responded immediately with a Rebecca Frisk drive that smacked the post and was cleared shortly thereafter.

George Washington doubled its advantage in the 76th minute before Bonavita’s goal brought the Minutewomen back within one. UMass had a chance to tie the game in the final moments, but Bonavita’s drive was pushed over the crossbar.

Field hockey

Richmond 3, UMass 1 — Elise Zwicklbauer scored two goals and an assist in the first half to lift No. 3 Richmond over No. 2 UMass in the Atlantic 10 semifinals in Richmond, Virginia.

The Minutewomen (10-10) attempted just two shots in the first half as the Spiders dominated the play. Zwicklbauer scored with 57 seconds left in the first quarter to open the scoring then added her assist midway through the second. She added the final nail with 1:04 left in the half on a deflection.

UMass started to push in the third quarter with four shots and forcing the Richmond keeper to make three saves. But Jess Beech’s early fourth-quarter goal was all the Minutewomen could muster in seeing their season end.

Women’s volleyball

Middlebury 3, Amherst 2 — The Mammoths battled back from a set down twice, but couldn’t secure the final few points as they bowed out of the NESCAC Tournament in the quarterfinals.

Emily Kolsky led three Amherst players in double figures with 19 kills, but had her ninth attacking error on Amherst’s only match point. Sophie Launsbach had 18 kills for the fourth-seeded Mammoths while Jamie Dailey added 15.
