EASTHAMPTON — A 64-year-old city woman was seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident on Lyman Street Monday morning.

Easthampton Police said Kathleen Coughlin was the lone occupant of a Subaru that ran off the road at 8:57 a.m., struck a mailbox and hit a tree off Lyman Street. A bystander ran up to the vehicle and turned off the car, which rolled backward before coming to rest.

Police Chief Robert Alberti said officers were nearby and began giving the woman first aid as soon as they arrived.

“Fortunately, there were five Easthampton police officers less than a mile away,” he said.

Alberti said the department’s accident reconstruction team is investigating the crash. He said there may have been a medical issue before the accident.

Easthampton, Southampton and Northampton emergency crews responded to the scene. Lyman Street between Northampton and Ballard streets were closed until around 1:30 p.m.

Officer Chad Alexander said Coughlin was taken to Cooley Dickinson Hospital with serious injuries. He said the vehicle has substantial damage.
