BELCHERTOWN — A 19-year-old man was killed Sunday night after being ejected from the vehicle he was driving, and being pursued by a Massachusetts State Police trooper, according to a State Police news release.

The identity of the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene, is not yet being released.

At about 8:45 p.m., the trooper on patrol on Route 202 south attempted to stop a 2011 Nissan Altima. Instead, the driver sped away, ran a red light at the intersection with Route 9, then failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway and went off the right side of the road.

During a preliminary crash reconstruction, police determined the Altima struck a mulch bed and became airborne, then struck a rock wall, a large tree, and a light post before hitting the front end of a 2023 Jeep Wrangler parked in the driveway at a 79 North Main St. home.

As a result of the impact, the Altima’s engine block launched from the engine compartment and became airborne, going through the brick exterior of a home at 73 North Main St. and landing in the second floor. The Altima’s front end struck the exterior of 79 North Main St., coming to a rest outside the home.

A 2020 Buick Envision, which was parked next to the Jeep, also sustained damage during the collision sequence.

No passengers were in the Altima and no one in the homes were injured, according to State Police.

The crash remains under investigation by the State Police, the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, State Police Crime Scene Services Section and State Police Detective Unit for Hampshire/Franklin Counties.
