Polish Heritage Committee to hold carol sing along

NORTHAMPTON — The Polish Heritage Committee of Northampton is sponsoring a Polish Christmas Carol Sing Along on Sunday, Jan. 7, at 2 p.m. at St. Valentine’s Church, 127 King St.

All friends of Polonia are invited. The carols will be led by singers from area church choirs. Refreshments will follow the event in the parish hall of the church. For more information, call Chris Newman at 413-584-4531 or Bob Gibowicz at 413-224-1309.

Sen. Mark’s office hours for January

WILLIAMBSURG — State Sen. Paul W. Mark’s staff will host office hours in Williamsburg on Tuesday, Jan. 9, and Tuesday, Jan. 23, from 1-3 p.m. both days, at Town Offices, 141 Main St.

Residents of any of the 57 municipalities in the senator’s Berkshire, Hampden, Franklin, and Hampshire District are encouraged to share ideas on current or potential state legislation, or to ask for assistance with issues involving any state agency.

Appointments are not required.

South Hadley candidates meet and sign event

SOUTH HADLEY — Residents are invited to a candidates meet and sign event at the South Hadley Library, 2 Canal St., on Saturday, from 10-11:30 a.m.

Prospective candidates for townwide offices or precinct-based Town Meeting members for the upcoming election in March will gather in the community room to meet with residents and collect signatures to be on the ballot. To be on the ballot, candidates must collect signatures from local registered voters, who are not obligated to vote for that candidate.

The town’s annual election and presidential primary is scheduled for March 5. Nomination papers are available until Jan. 16.

SOUTH HADLEY — Pioneer Valley Performing Art’s Sustainability Club recently held a Food Drive to benefit the Amherst Survival Center. Donations were accepted throughout December, as well as at the Visual Arts Department’s Winter Art Gallery on Dec. 21st. In total two large boxes and several bags of groceries were donated to the Survival Center.

The Amherst Survival Center’s Food Pantry provides assistance to residents of Amherst, Belchertown, Deerfield, Granby, Hadley, Leverett, Pelham, Shutesbury, South Deerfield, South Hadley, Sunderland, Ware and Whately, and to those who are experiencing homelessness.

PVPA’s Sustainability Club is one of over 30 student-led clubs and affinity groups at the public charter school. The Club focuses on protecting the environment through sustainability efforts. Other recent projects have included a clothing donation drive that collected over 525 pounds of clothing. The club then held a free thrift shop at PVPA’s Unity Day celebration, where students were able to shop for free, taking home 340 pounds of “new to them” clothing. The remaining 185 pounds of clothing was donated to Margret’s Pantry in Holyoke.

Nutritionist to hold virtual ‘Saving at the Supermarket’ workshop

AMHERST — The Jones Library will host nutritionist Jill Patterson for a virtual workshop, “Saving at the Supermarket,” designed to help people learn how to save money and eat nutritiously. The event will take place Tuesday, Jan. 9 from 7-8 p.m.

At the event, Patterson will discuss strategies to reduce grocery bills while eating nutritiously. Specific action strategies, interactive game questions, and recipe resources will be included. As a registered dietitian and nutrition expert, Patterson brings her background of menu planning on a budget for school systems, consulting for grocery store chains, and being a cost-conscious shopper herself.
