News Briefs: Roadwork in Plainfield; bake sale in Hadley

Road closurein Plainfield

PLAINFIELD — Route 8A will be closed this week to through traffic from Route 116 (near the old package store) through Hawley to Charlemont for emergency repairs.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation will be repairing about 1,000 feet of the road in the area of Pudding Hollow Road. Only local traffic will be allowed through.

The closure is expected to end Friday, though it may be extended.

 

Senior centertag, bake sale

HADLEY — A tag and bake sale featuring many $1 items is being held indoors Saturday at the Hadley Senior Center, 46 Middle St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Glassware, kitchen items, books, collectibles, sports memorabilia and other miscellaneous items will be part of the tag sale, which features several vendors. No furniture is being sold.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Hadley Council on Aging, the event is rain or shine and will begin promptly at 10 a.m.

AMHERST — Lee McColgan, author of “A House Restored,” will speak Friday at an Amherst Historical Society-sponsored talk at the Bangs Community Center, Room 101, at 12:30 p.m.

McColgan’s book explores the preservation of the 1702 Loring House, a New England colonial home in Pembroke where he lives.

McColgan has worked on Boston’s Old North Church, Louisa May Alcott’s Orchard House and other buildings.

 

Comments sought on open space plan

CHESTERFIELD — The Open Space Committee invites residents to comment Saturday on the final phase of Chesterfield’s Open Space and Recreation Plan, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Chesterfield Community Center.

The committee is preparing to finalize the plan and submit it to the commonwealth for approval. Panel members will provide a brief refresher of the planning process, showcase some maps, highlight key findings, and share the vision and goals that came out of two community meetings held last winter.

This will be followed by community prioritization of the plan’s recommendations. The plan may be viewed on the town website.

Refreshments will be served.

Connections Café in Hadley

HADLEY — The Hadley Senior Center and the Hopkins Academy Key Club are collaborating on the next Connections Cafe, with music, bingo and refreshments, on April 24 at 1:30 p.m. at the Hadley Senior Center, 46 Middle St.

Connections Cafe provides a safe, supportive and caring space for older adults with dementia or memory loss, joined by their care partners, and is part of the town’s Age Friendly and Dementia Friendly initiative. The program, open to residents and those in surrounding communities, is funded with a grant from the Massachusetts Association of Council on Aging and Senior Center Directors Inc.

The Hopkins Academy Key Club has participated in the annual Alzheimer’s Association walk, Monte’s March and developed service projects for the Hadley community.
