SUNDERLAND — A longstanding fundraiser returns to the Sunderland Public Library this weekend, as the Friends of the Sunderland Public Library host its annual plant, book and bake sale.

The sales, which have been held for at least the last 30 years, will take place at the library, 20 School St., on Saturday, May 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with good deals on books and plants, along with family-friendly activities. The Sunderland Women’s Club will also be hosting a tag sale behind Town Hall at the same time. The book sale will be held rain or shine, however, the event will be moved into the library if it rains.

“It’s one of our major fundraisers for the library,” said Barbara Morrell, president of the Friends of the Sunderland Public Library. “It’s a really good deal, people should come to Sunderland.”

Hardcover books are $2, large paperbacks are $1 and 50 cents for small paperbacks and children’s books, although there may be books of greater value present. During the last two hours of the sale, people can fill up a grocery bag of books for $8. The event is cash-only and all proceeds go toward funding library programs, technology, museum passes, the newsletter and other odds and ends that the town may not be able to purchase.

The plant sale will feature both outdoor and house plants, along with advice on how to care for them.

Alongside the sales, the Sunderland Police and Fire departments will have tables to chat with residents and put on demonstrations for kids. A family concert will kick off at 10:30 a.m. with The Grumpytime Club Band and Sunderland-based Adventure East will talk about its new partnership with the library, as the kayak loan program prepares to launch in the summer.

“It’s going to be really fun for all ages,” Library Director Katherine Umstot said.
