AMHERST — An assault on a senior citizen on the sidewalk outside a downtown restaurant led to the arrest of a Rowley man on Monday afternoon.

Ian W. Hill, 32, was taken into custody at 5:18 p.m. near Ann Whalen Apartments on Kellogg Avenue, on a charge of assault and battery causing injury on a person over the age of 60 after he struck a man in the face a short time earlier, police said.

The injured man was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment.

Once the victim was on the ground on North Pleasant Street, where he had allegedly fallen following the punch to his face, Hill allegedly poured water on him, according to witnesses.

Hill then attempted to flee the scene but was chased down by officers, and identified as the assailant before his arrest, according to police.

The incident remains under investigation.
