Amherst’s Michael Hixon is in pole position to make another Olympic diving team.

He and partner Andrew Capobianco qualified for the U.S Olympic Diving Trials men’s synchronized 3-meter springboard final with the top mark of 848.1 points after Monday’s semifinals in Indianapolis. They have a 63.21-point lead over Gregory Duncan and Grayson Campbell, and those points carry over to Friday’s final, which will be broadcast on the Olympic Channel at 7 p.m.

“It’s 18 dives here at the Olympic trials so you gotta do all 18,” Hixon said. “That’s our mindset, and we’re moving on right now from that semifinal and we’re looking forward to having a good final.”

The pair also led after the morning’s preliminary round with 413.82 points. Only the top team will qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in August. In individual events, the top two divers make it.

“The prelim is a final here,” Hixon said.

The pair of Indiana University products ended the semifinal with their best dive, scoring 87.78 points on a forward 4½ somersault tuck.

Should he qualify, it will be Hixon’s second time at the Olympics. He won a silver medal in 2016 with Sam Dorman.

Hixon also is entered in the men’s individual 3-meter springboard. Those prelims start Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. The 7 p.m. semifinals will be broadcast on the Olympic Channel.
