50 Years Ago

■Neville Jeffrey Lord, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nelville B. Lord, formerly of Northampton, has announced his candidacy for a delegate seat to the 1972 Republican National Convention. Lord, a resident of Pennsylvania, was educated in Northampton schools. He is now a junior at Franklin and Marshall College, where he is a government major and pre-law student.

■Much is yet to be done before the world premiere opening of the original musical by Mrs. Esther L. Budgar, “Little Friends from Front Street” in December. The year’s first production at Northampton High School is being worked on by members of all three classes.

25 Years Ago

■Starting in January, students at the JFK Middle School will have a chance to join one of six “cultural identity groups,” the second phase of a model program that aims to improve racial understanding. Made up of 12 students each, the groups will meet weekly to explore issues of ethnic identity.

■Next week Northampton will begin searching for a tenant to lease the vacant South Street School for 15 years. By early January, the city could be ready to choose a tenant for the 102-year-old building, which has been empty since 1990, when neighborhood children began attending the Bridge Street School.

10 Years Ago

■An unusually sunny and warm Friday brought holiday shoppers to Pioneer Valley stores in droves. Most interviewed by the Gazette reported a good, if a bit harried, Black Friday shopping experience. By mid-morning, the rush of early-bird shoppers had thinned out and midday shoppers said stores were well-organized, lines weren’t too long and store employees helpful.

■The annual Manna Soup Kitchen Thanksgiving meal at Edwards Church Thursday was the biggest ever, organizers said. Exactly 1,000 meals were offered to area residents in need, or anyone who just wanted to enjoy a little camaraderie with their turkey and potatoes.
