200 Years Ago

■The number of deaths in Northampton the last year was 39: ten, under 10 years of age; three, between 10 and 20; five, between 20 and 30; four, between 30 and 40; five, between 40 and 50; three, between 50 and 60; four, between 60 and 70; four, between 70 and 80; and one, between 80 and 90. Nineteen heads of family died.    <sbull value="sbull"><text xmlns="urn:schemas-teradp-com:gn4tera"></text></sbull>Two females were in town last week and purchased at one store a red Cassimere shawl, at another a pair of shoes. They are requested to call where they made the purchase of shoes and correct an error as soon as may be.

100 Years Ago

■The new Calvin restaurant, which is to be run by Alfred J. Bushey and William J. O’Brien, will open for business at 4 o’clock next Monday morning. It is the old Frank W. Woodward restaurant at the lower end of Main Street. It has been fitted up in fine shape, the kitchen being remodeled.

■The Norwood Ice company finds that ice is 10 inches thick in spite of the rain and thaw of this week. Cutting will begin just as soon as there is cold weather. The ice should make an inch or two more before cutting begins.

50 Years Ago

■Newly elected Northampton School Committee Member Deborah Weeks, the only woman on the committee, calls herself “the rose amongst the thorns — I may be outnumbered but I won’t be out-spoken.” She sees a lot of change coming to the school committee now that three new members have begun their terms.

■Miss Mary E. Cahillane, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen J. Cahillane, of 2 Franklin Ct., Northampton, was recently elected to “Who’s Who Among Students in Colleges and Universities” at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in Chicopee. Miss Cahillane is a speech pathology major.
