AMHERST - Temple Grandin didn't talk until she was 4. Images, not words, filled her head. She had frequent, unexplainable temper tantrums. In her words, she had "all the symptoms of autism." Grandin, now 62, is in fact autistic -- and also a doctor and professor of animal science, an inventor, an accomplished writer, and something of a celebrity. On Tuesday, Grandin was seated in the front of the Campus Center Book Store at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, patiently signing copies of her books, as eager animal science majors, fans and other autograph seekers champed at the bit while waiting to meet her.

What a mess! Winter storm blankets Valley, kills power to thousands

NORTHAMPTON - Fallout from Wednesday's shifting precipitation included closed schools, homes and businesses without power, flooded streets, damaged vehicles and backs made to ache from shoveling the miserable stuff. As heavy, wet snow and the soaking rain that follow it brought down tree limbs and power lines, more than 14,000 Western Massachusetts Electric Co. customers lost power, almost half of them in Hampshire County. And power to some customers may not be restored until Thursday.

AMHERST - U.S. Rep. Barney Frank of Massachusetts, visiting the University of Massachusetts at Amherst to discuss his recent biography, said Tuesday that Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh is right that partisan politics on Capitol Hill are getting out of control. But Frank added that his fellow Democrat could do more to change that by staying in Congress than by stepping out of politics.

Neal urges piecemeal votes on health care reform

NORTHAMPTON - If U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal had his druthers, the 1,000-plus pages of stalled health care reform would be broken into pieces and voted on one by one. Citing the high cost of emergency care for the uninsured, Neal, who represents the 2nd Congressional District, including Northampton and Hadley, said he has long supported health care reform, but added that he is frustrated that the debate has, at times, gotten bogged down by detractors touting nonexistent "death panels" and an alleged government takeover of health insurance.
