Legislators aim to boost local food in schools

AMHERST - More locally grown food may soon be available in Massachusetts schools, as state legislators work to increase the amount of local produce schools can buy outside of their standard food service contracts. The proposal, which was filed as an amendment to the school nutrition bill passed by the House and Senate last week, has attracted a wide coalition of supporters, ranging from anti-hunger organizations to "Farm to School" advocates, who say the measure will increase access to nutritional food in Massachusetts schools while also serving as a boost to the state's farmers.

HUNTINGTON - Joseph R. St. Martin, 67, a retired mechanic for over 15 years for FC Taplin Corp. in West Springfield, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010.

Born in Southampton on Dec. 25, 1942, he was the son of the late Bernard St. Martin and Germaine (Chaunt) St. Martin. He lived in Huntington for the past year, coming from Ellsworth, Maine.

The Franklin and Hampshire councils of governments - COGs, as they're known - are different animals, like the different county governments from which they grew.

Now Hampshire COG, representing only a dozen of the smaller 20 Hampshire County towns, has launched a strategic planning process to figure out whether it should try to be more like its larger counterpart to the north.

Trevor Hamel scored 16 points, J.J. Edinger had 12 and Jeremy Tanguay chipped in with 14 for Gateway.
