Northampton gets deal on bond for police station

NORTHAMPTON - The city last week authorized the sale of a $19.75 million long-term bond, most of which will fund construction of a new police station.

The 20-year bond, sold in a competitive bid process to Morgan Stanley & Co., comes with an interest rate of 2.25 percent.

Easthampton OKs water, sewer extension to Fort Hill Road area

EASTHAMPTON - Residents living in the area of Fort Hill Road could have city water and sewer by May after the City Council voted to extend the pipelines to the northeast part of the city.

The $50,000 project was instigated by plans for a brewery at 20 Fort Hill Road, which would require both city water and sewer.

Northampton City Council eyes future loss of trash revenue

NORTHAMPTON - The city's Public Works chief assured the City Council Thursday night that there is enough money to cover the costs associated with the pending closure of its landfill.

"We're trying to ensure to the community that existing debt services and existing bills are taken care of when the landfill closes," said DPW Director Ned Huntley.

Amherst ZBA takes up Sunset Avenue project

AMHERST - A single-family home at 156 Sunset Ave. close to the Southwest Area of the University of Massachusetts campus could be converted to a two-family home.

The Zoning Board of Appeals has scheduled a hearing on the request from Eagle Crest Property Management to make the conversion for next Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Town Room at Town Hall.

Northampton policy advances on extended hours for liquor-license holders

NORTHAMPTON - People who like to eat late at night - or early in the morning - may soon have additional dining options in the city.

The License Commission Thursday hammered out a new city policy that will allow businesses that hold liquor licenses to extend closing hours for food service. The new policy would not apply to alcohol service or to businesses that don't serve alcohol.
