UMass opens trip by edging Kansas

The University of Massachusetts softball team survived a rocky first inning and a scary seventh as the Minutewomen defeated Kansas 7-6 on Thursday in the first game of the San Diego Classic at Aztec Softball Field.

UMass (12-4) played San Diego State in the second game of its doubleheader, and today will face Illinois-Chicago at 5 p.m. and San Diego at 7:30 p.m..

Jouannet, Lutenegger help Owls sweep

Junior first baseman Cassy Jouannet of Conway, a graduate of Frontier Regional, had one hit in each game for the Westfield State College softball team which defeated Concordia (Wis.) University 9-8 and Bowdoin 8-0 on Thursday in Clermont, Fla.

Jouannet scored a run in the shutout of the Polar Bears.

March 17 each year is my favorite spring training game, because there is a special buzz in the crowd on St. Patrick's Day.

The players wear green hats and shirts, the bases are green and many of the fans dress specially for the day.

Daubach to manage team in Pittsfield

PITTSFIELD (AP) - Pittsfield's new minor league baseball franchise has announced that it will be known as the Colonials and retain former Boston Red Sox player Brian Daubach as its manager.

Daubach managed the team last season when it was known as the American Defenders of New Hampshire.
