AMHERST - The first run Jesse Morgan started gave the University of Massachusetts the lead. The second one delivered the knockout blow. The Minutemen erased a double-digit deficit in the first half and nearly gave up a 12-point edge in the second half before pulling away for a 76-67 win over St. Bonaventure Wednesday at the Mullins Center.

AMHERST - What would have been the biggest play of Maxie Esho's night wasn't quite completed. On a fast break, University of Massachusetts point guard Chaz Williams tried to throw an overhead hook pass from the right side of the basket to Esho for an alley-oop. The throw was off, but the freshman leaned to catch the ball and nearly threw down a reverse dunk, but hit the rim.

AMHERST - During Monday's Atlantic 10 conference call, Saint Louis coach Rick Majerus remarked that there are about 25 legitimate candidates for the Atlantic 10's all-conference first team. If Majerus is exaggerating, it's only slightly. Making things even more difficult is that most of those candidates are guards, as the league is filled with loaded backcourts. Almost every team in the conference features a guard as its best player.

UMass men's basketball players enjoy return to roots

It was one of the few disappointing performances in Lou Roe's career. Playing against La Salle in front of a crowd filled with friends and family in his hometown of Atlantic City, N.J., in 1995, the University of Massachusetts All-American forward had just two points, well below his 16.5 per game average.

Strong second half by Terrell Vinson leads UMass men's basketball over Colonials

WASHINGTON, D.C. - First-half foul trouble only left University of Massachusetts men's basketball player Terrell Vinson fresh for the second half Saturday.

Vinson was visibly angry when he was called for his second foul with 4 minutes, 35 seconds remaining in the first half. He took that frustration out on George Washington and led the Minutemen to an 86-75 win at the Smith Center.

Minutemen withstand foul trouble for Terrell Vinson, Raphiael Putney

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Foul trouble for Terrell Vinson and Raphiael Putney has spelled trouble for the University of Massachusetts basketball team in recent games.

So when the two Minutemen each picked up two fouls in the second half, there was reason for concern Saturday at George Washington. A similar script led to a disastrous loss at Duquesne in January.

UMass men's basketball looks to bounce back against George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. - With the wounds of Wednesday night's loss at Rhode Island still fresh, the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team will try to put that game behind it when it plays George Washington at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Smith Center.

Rhode Island delivers deflating overtime loss to UMass men's basketball

KINGSTON, R.I. - The overwhelming optimism about the potential for the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team after Saturday's win over Saint Louis took a sizable dent Wednesday night.

Last-place Rhode Island, which stunned Dayton Saturday, added the Minutemen to its victim list by delivering an 81-78 upset in overtime Wednesday at the Ryan Center.

Fouls by Minutemen troubling for Derek Kellogg

KINGSTON, R.I. - Just 21 seconds into overtime Wednesday, University of Massachusetts junior forward Terrell Vinson lowered his shoulder and was called for a charge. It was his fifth foul and Rhode Island went on to win 81-78.

UMass men's basketball likely headed to postseason tournament

There are still nine games left in the regular season and a conference tournament to play, so the University of Massachusetts' postseason fate is a long way from being decided.

But the Minutemen are 16-5 and tied for first place in a hard-to-figure-out Atlantic 10. Barring a collapse, UMass looks likely headed for one of the four postseason tournaments.

AMHERST - When the final seconds ticked off the clock Saturday afternoon, Jesse Morgan raised his arms in the air in celebration as the biggest Mullins Center crowd in nearly five years took to its feet to give the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team an ovation. The Minutemen survived some anxious moments in the second half but sent the 8,399 fans home happy with a 72-59 win over Saint Louis. "I'm really happy and proud of the team today. I thought they battled even when Saint Louis was making a big run there in the second half," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said.

With many of the 8,399 fans still within earshot and others potentially tuning in as they drove away, Kellogg took advantage and thanked those who came.

UMass basketball game plans for Saint Louis' unique style

AMHERST - The preparation has changed from game to game.Against Duquesne on Jan. 18, the University of Massachusetts men's
basketball team had to be ready for an opponent that wanted to push the
tempo, run and press almost as much as the Minutemen do. Three days
later they had to get themselves set to face Richmond's modified version
of the backdoor-cut heavy Princeton offense and the Spiders' fairly
unique matchup zone. For Saturday's 2 p.m. game against Saint Louis at the Mullins Center, the Minutemen will try to counteract the Billikens' slow-down, grind-out-the-shot clock, screen-heavy offense and tight defense.

Cady Lalanne could be out for rest of season

AMHERST - University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Derek Kellogg is not counting on Cady Lalanne any time soon and might not have the freshman big man back at all this season.

Kellogg said Lalanne, who has been out with a foot injury since injuring it Dec. 30 against Central Connecticut, is due to see a doctor today to measure the progress of his rehabilitation.

Dayton beats tough foes to lead Atlantic 10 men's basketball standings

Even when the Xavier men's basketball team started Atlantic 10 play slowly, it was still assumed that the Musketeers, everyone's preseason pick to win the conference and a dark horse to make a Final Four run, would eventually right their ship and seize control of the conference race. Xavier still might do that, but it's going to have to catch Dayton, which at least temporarily has established itself as the Atlantic 10 favorite. There were plenty of questions surrounding the Flyers entering the season. But instead of faltering they've thrived, opening conference play at 4-1 against some of the league's toughest teams.

Jesse Morgan scores 20 to lead UMass men's basketball over Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. - When the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team had ventured away from Amherst recently, the results often were not encouraging.

That seemed to change Saturday, when the Minutemen led virtually all the way and turned back a second-half Richmond rally to post a 79-68 win at the Robins Center.

UMass men's basketball prepares for Richmond

The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team will have to switch preparation gears quickly.

After playing up-tempo Duquesne in Pittsburgh on Wednesday, the Minutemen will face Richmond and its modified version of the Princeton offense, Saturday at 5 p.m. in Virginia.

Foul trouble, turnovers plague UMass men's basketball in loss at Duquesne

PITTSBURGH - The University of Massachusetts couldn't overcome a lot of foul trouble and even more turnovers as the Minutemen fell to Duquesne 80-69 Wednesday at the A.J. Palumbo Center.

Sean Carter shines for Minutemen in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH - If it wasn't for Wednesday's 80-69 loss, Sean Carter would love playing at Duquesne.

The University of Massachusetts senior has shone in two career games in Pittsburgh.

In 2010, Carter had 11 points and a career-high 19 rebounds in an 84-80 overtime win by UMass. He had a put-back dunk late to seal that victory.
