A “Spring Fling” auction and cocktail party will be held March 22 to

benefit the building fund for the new $5.1 million library, at Mount

Holyoke College from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Willits-Hallowell Conference

Center, off Park Street in South Hadley.

Virginia Snopek, chairwoman of the Library Board of Trustees, said the

event will raise funds for library furnishings such as circulation desks,

chairs and computer terminals.

The library has a state grant of $2.7 million to help build the new

library, but that money only covers “bricks and mortar,” according to

Snopek; furnishings will be purchased with some of the $1.1 million that

Granby voters approved last year, and the fund-raising by the Friends of

the Granby Public Library.

“It’s going to be terrific fun,” said John Thibbitts, a member of the

Friends and the library’s Capital Fundraising Committee, said. Thibbitts

said a previous fundraiser, the Farm to Table Meal that featured food from

local farmers, was well received.

“People are still talking about it,” he said.

One special item up for auction is a tour of the LEGO® model shop in

Enfield, Conn., where master model builder Chris Steininger creates

life-size models with LEGOs.

“It’s an awesome opportunity,” said Janice McArdle, children’s services

librarian, noting the model shop is not open to the public. The tour can

accommodate six to eight people and will last 60 to 90 minutes, including a

30 percent discount on purchases at the company store.

Tickets are $25 and available at the library. The event features hors

d'oeuvres, a cash bar and five tickets for the Chinese auction. Auction

items include:

* A spring weekend stay in a Cape Cod residence;

* Cape Cod charter boat fishing trip

* One-year family membership to the Holyoke Children's Museum

* Three-month family membership to the Holyoke YMCA

* Tour of the State House and lunch with a representative or senator

* Rides on a fire truck and in a police cruiser

* Reserved parking space for one year at the new library

* Two Red Sox tickets with bus transportation to Fenway Park

* An 18-by-18-inch black walnut Shaker-style end table, made of wood

harvested from the library site by local craftsman Bob Gould

Other auction items include golf foursome gift certificates; lessons in

piano, tennis, knitting, riding and fitness; landscaping services; handmade

pottery and jewelry; produce from local farms; automotive services; hair

and nail care; and dog grooming;

“We have something for everyone. Local businesses have been just amazing in

donating goods and services,” Snopek said. The ongoing fundraising effort

shows “it’s only with all of us working together that we will have a 21st

century library,” she said.

The library is holding a raffle for a “Field of Daisies” quilt made by

Gloria Caver of Granby, a retired librarian and avid quilter. The quilt

measures 64 by 90 inches and features a patched front in soft blues and

yellows and daisy-print fabric. Tickets are $5 each and available at the

library. Proceeds benefit the building fund. The drawing for the quilt will

be March 22.

The annual rabies clinic will be held March 23 from 10 a.m. to noon at the

Old Fire Department at the rear of Kellogg Hall, according to Town Clerk

Katherine A. Kelly-Regan. Cost is $15 per animal. Dogs must be leashed and

cats must be in carriers. If possible, owners should bring their pets’ most

recent rabies certificate. Dog licensing will be available at the clinic.

March and April are the months dogs are licensed in Granby and, to avoid a

late fee of $25, dogs should be licensed by May 1. Fees are $6 for spayed

or neutered animals, $15 for others. A copy of rabies vaccination

certificate is required. For information, call Kelly-Regan’s office at

Dogs can be licensed by mail by sending her office the information and fee,

and including a self-addressed envelope with two stamps. Checks should be

made payable to the town of Granby. Residents who registered their dogs

through the annual census mailing should receive their tags by March 31,

Kelly-Regan said.

Kelly-Regan also said the deadline for submitting private warrant articles

for the May 13 annual Town Meeting is March 29 at noon. Petitioners must

collect signatures from 10 registered Granby voters to get an article on

the warrant.
