UMass women's basketball falls to No. 25 St. Bonaventure

AMHERST - For most of the game, the University of Massachusetts women's basketball team looked more like a up-and-coming squad than a team on a six-game losing streak. But a 9-0 run late in the second half allowed No. 25 St. Bonaventure to pull away as the Minutewomen dropped their seventh consecutive game 69-54 Wednesday at the Mullins Center.

AMHERST - What would have been the biggest play of Maxie Esho's night wasn't quite completed. On a fast break, University of Massachusetts point guard Chaz Williams tried to throw an overhead hook pass from the right side of the basket to Esho for an alley-oop. The throw was off, but the freshman leaned to catch the ball and nearly threw down a reverse dunk, but hit the rim.

The Minutemen erased a double-digit deficit in the first half and nearly gave up a 12-point edge in the second half before pulling away for a 76-67 win over St. Bonaventure Wednesday at the Mullins Center.

AMHERST - During Monday's Atlantic 10 conference call, Saint Louis coach Rick Majerus remarked that there are about 25 legitimate candidates for the Atlantic 10's all-conference first team. If Majerus is exaggerating, it's only slightly. Making things even more difficult is that most of those candidates are guards, as the league is filled with loaded backcourts. Almost every team in the conference features a guard as its best player.

It was one of the few disappointing performances in Lou Roe's career. Playing against La Salle in front of a crowd filled with friends and family in his hometown of Atlantic City, N.J., in 1995, the University of Massachusetts All-American forward had just two points, well below his 16.5 per game average.

'Best feeling of my life' for Victor Cruz as Giants' Super rally again beats Patriots

INDIANAPOLIS - Victor Cruz got to salsa. James Ihedigbo could do nothing but pack up his name plate and a couple of other mementos from a game whose result he'd rather forget. The two former University of Massachusetts players left Lucas Oil Stadium on opposite ends of the Super Bowl experience. Cruz, the second-year wide receiver for the Giants, caught four passes for 25 yards and the first touchdown of the game while the Patriots and safety Ihedigbo once again fell victim to late-game heroics by quarterback Eli Manning in a 21-17 Giants victory in Super Bowl 46.
