EASTHAMPTON – Since starting work May 23 as city engineer, Michael McManus already dove into a vital water asset management project.
McManus, of Holyoke, succeeded James Gracia as city engineer. Gracia retired in January after 17 years on the job.
McManus has 16 years experience and most recently worked at Tighe & Bond. He has a master’s degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
Department of Public Works Director Joseph I. Pipczynski said McManus’ experience working for the engineering firm will be an important asset to the city.
The firm frequently works with municipalities to complete projects. Easthampton is working with Tighe & Bond consultants to complete its Water Resources Management Plan.
The comprehensive document is meant to set priorities for spending on needed upgrades and improvements in water, sewer and drainage systems in the city.
“He jumped right in on our integrated Water Resource Management Plan,” Pipczynski said.
In addition to his experience working with Tighe & Bond engineers, Pipczynski said McManus’s experience working with state regulators is another important asset.
“He doesn’t have to go and introduce himself. He knows where to get answers,” Pipczynski said. “He knows what the municipal side needs.”
Among the large projects McManus is set to lead is the repair of water pumping stations in the city. “He comes highly qualified in pump station design and outfitting,” Pipczynski said.
McManus earns $37.58 per hour in the 35-hour per week position, according to city Personnel Director Jane F. Sakiewicz.
