UMass men's basketball freshmen are all enrolled

The UMass men's basketball team's three incoming true freshman are all enrolled in classes and will be freshman in the fall according to coach Derek Kellogg. While C.J. Anderson is already cleared and eligible, both big men, Rashaan Holloway and Malik Hines, are both waiting for the NCAA Clearinghouse to determine their eligibility one way or the other. Even if they're ineligible, both player will remain on campus as nonqualifiers and begin playing next year. UMass will need at least one player on its to 0

UMass injured LB Trey Seals "50-50" for Saturday. OL Ryan Johnson will likely play

On Monday's Mid-American Conference coaches teleconference, Whipple said junior linebacker Trey Seals, who suffered and undisclosed leg injury in Saturday's loss to BC is "50-50" to play Saturday at 3 p.m. Ryan Johnson, the JUCO offensive lineman who was declared eligible last week, is likely to have some role pretty quickly. The 6-foot-5, 320-pound St. Louis native, was expected to contend for a starting job if he'd been eligible immediately. 0

Matt Vautour College Football Picks Week I

After not doing picks at all last year, while on semi-paternity leave, I'm back. MAC Games Thursday Akron over Howard Central Michigan over Chattanooga NIU over Presbyterian Friday Bowling Green over Western Kentucky Saturday BC over UMass - I think this will be respectable, but there's a long road from 1-11 to beating BC. Ball State over Colgate Buffalo over Duquesne - I can't believe ESPN Gameday isn't at this game Ohio over Kent State - Marshall over Miami (Ohio) - One of these teams 0

2014-15 UMass Hoop Schedule

After dropping its four required games against the MAC, UMass released a men’s basketball schedule with four games against the MAAC instead. The Atlantic 10 released its conference schedule Wednesday, allowing its members to release their individual schedules for the 2014-15 season. UMass leaves New England just twice before new years with road games at LSU (Dec. 2) and at BYU (Dec. 23). Their exempted tournament is the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Tipoff at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut.  The Minutemen open the season with 0

Tattoo Tuesday: Jovan Santos-Knox

Despite not having one myself, I'm kind of fascinated with tattoos. I've often referenced a player's ink in my stories and have writted full-length tattoo features on Lari Ketner and Rashaun Freeman. I think they offer an interesting window into what's important to someone. So every Tuesday on this blog this season, I plan on showing a tattoo from one UMass athlete and asking them to tell the story behind it. History will show that junior linebacker Jovan Santos-Knox was the first player ever featured: 0

UMass WR Jalen Williams making his case for playing time

AMHERST — Junior receiver Jalen Williams, a transfer from Dean Junior College who was one of the breakout players in the spring, carried over his strong play into the fall. “He’s taken a big step. The day he stepped in here I didn’t really know him,” UMass coach Mark Whipple said. “He made some plays in the spring, carried it over to the summer and he’s had a good two days (in camp). He’s playing faster than he did in the spring.” The Georgia native 0

A.J. Doyle and Blake Frohnapfel begin competition to be UMass’ starting QB

Returning starter A.J. Doyle and newcomer Blake Frohnapfel were inconsistent as they began their quest to be UMass’ starting quarterback Monday, but both did enough to please coach Mark Whipple. “Both guys were really good today,” said Whipple, who expected to name a starter early in camp. “They both did some things. We just let them compete.” Sophomore Penn State transfer Austin Whipple, the coach’s youngest son, and walk-on Andrew Verboys also saw time under center. True freshman QB Ross Comis didn’t throw the ball 0
