The Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School competed at the River Valley Athletic League cross country championship on Wednesday at Ashley Reservoir in Holyoke.

The boys team placed first overall with a score of 59. The girls placed second with 75.

Odin Moore (third, 19:41), Hunter Palm (fourth, 20:08.4) and Kyan Frantz (fifth, 20:37.6) led the way for the boys.

Jane Scanlan-Emigh (fourth, 23:46.2) and Arden Clarke-DeGrenier (ninth, 26:04.7) led the way for the girls.

The first place finish for the boys gives the program its first league championship in team history.

โ€œI think that we had finished most races throughout the year first or second against teams this season,โ€ PVCIC coach Kevin Brown said. โ€œThe championship was definitely a goal of ours coming into the final meet of the season, especially for some of the younger kids.โ€

The program has been able to seamlessly integrate some middle school-aged runners like Mahri Hayden (13th, 26:45.7) for the girls and Aaron Lo (19th, 23:09.1) and Ezrah Gindsberg (29th, 24:26) for the boys.

โ€œThey have been extremely successful this year,โ€ Brown said. โ€œIโ€™m looking forward to watching them the next few years.

Boys soccer

Easthampton 2, South Hadley 1 โ€” Dylan Schmidt scored twice to lead the Eagles (9-5-3, 8-1-1 Schmid). Caden Herbert had one assist. Zach Kuglar made four saves.

Pat Lavelle scored for the the Tigers (8-4-4, 8-1 Schmid). Max McCurdy had the assist. Xavier Butzer made 10 saves.

Easthampton led 2-0 at halftime.

The win clinched the Eaglesโ€™ second-straight Schmid league title.

Gateway Regional 4, Duggan 0 โ€” The Gators (10-7-1) scored all four goals in the first half.

Jake Thayer (assist), Evan Cortis (assist), Nick Herman and Zach Otterbeck each found the net. Justin Marge and Matt Morin each had an assist.

โ€œWe had a lot of contributors,โ€ Gateway coach Tim Gamble said. โ€ Thereโ€™s going to be a lot of competition going into the preparation week for the postseason.โ€

Northampton 4, Frontier Regional 1 โ€”Tommy Harte scored two goals to lead the Blue Devils (2-14-2). Samuel Curran and Andre Marquis each scored once. Justice Rogers had an assist. Shazair Tasneem and Alex Caldanaro played in net for Northampton.

Ethan DeMaio scored the lone goal for the Red Hawks (5-10-2). Tenzin Tsundue had the assist. Nick Jarvis made seven saves.

The Blue Devils, led by a senior-heavy lineup, rallied after going down 0-1 early in the game.

โ€œThey hunkered down and played well with really nothing on the line,โ€ Northampton coach Aldo Tiboni said. โ€œIt was nice to see them finish their careers strongly.โ€

Girls soccer

Granby 5, Holyoke 0 โ€” Four second-half goals led the Rams (12-4-2).

Nora Young (assist), Kaeleigh Croteau, Sienna Hill, Kayla Klekotka and Ella Laliberte each scored a goal. Kristen Trembley, Julia Frappier and Briana Sosa each had an assist. Julia Gauvin had eight saves to keep the clean sheet.

โ€œThe schedule has really challenged us and prepared us for the playoffs,โ€ Granby coach Bob Weaver said. โ€œCanโ€™t play a harder schedule than the one we had.โ€

East Longmeadow 4, Northampton 2 โ€” Mary Greeneโ€™s brace was not enough for the Blue Devils (2-14-2).

Northampton led 2-1 at the half.

Gabby Katz and Caroline Tanner each had an assist. Sydney Lewandowski had 13 saves in goal.

โ€œWe had opportunities but didnโ€™t finish,โ€ Northampton coach Vanessa Butynski said. โ€œWe let the seniors play out the game and just have fun out there.โ€

Minnechaug 5, Belchertown 0 โ€” Julia Jimenez made seven saves for the Orioles (9-8-1, 1-5-1 Coombs).

The Falcons scored four goals in the second half.
