■Students of Smith’s Vocational High School may gain a one-fifth-acre pond to use for the study of wildlife management if approval is given at a Hatch Act Hearing tonight in City Hall. The school is applying to the Conservation Commission to dredge and dam an already existing pond located off Route 9 and north of the Kennedy Junior High School.

■Early yesterday afternoon a big red and white Coca-Cola truck pulled into the recycling center on Locust Street from Rutland, Vt., and dumped two tons-worth of no-deposit, no-return bottles in a crushing bin. It is a trip Coca-Cola will make three times a week for the next six months at least, and it will be worth some $2,400 to Northampton, because the Solid Waste Management Committee will market the recycled glass in Connecticut.

■Saturday a flag-raising ceremony will take place in front of the newly remodeled Calvin Theater. The long-dormant flagpole has been without an American flag for at least 40 years. The remodeled theater will hold its first public event inside on Wednesday, when jazz great Dave Brubeck will perform.

■A proposal to build a 24-unit cluster development designed as a cohousing community received a go-ahead Tuesday night from members of the Board of Health. The board approved the building of a septic system for the community planned by the Pathways Cohousing Group for 40 acres off Florence Road.

■Amherst school officials hosted a delegation of officials from the town of Kanegasaki, Japan, at their meeting Tuesday night, where a short ceremony was held in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the signing of an International Sister City Friendship Agreement with Amherst.

■The Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School is preparing bids for the construction of a four-story, 15-classroom addition to its Russell Street building after receiving a $10.6 million federal loan this week. The money will allow the school to double the size of its quarters.
