This is turning out to be a historic year for climate disasters everywhere. We may think we are safer in our little corner, but climate change is global because Earth is one huge and intricate ecosystem. Recent research by the U.S. Department of Energy showed mega wildfires in California linked to increasing severity of storms in the central U.S., resulting in extreme hail, deluges and increasing risk of flash floods. The amount of carbon released by those fires are astronomical in its implications.

Climates changes are propelled by warming gases such as carbon and methane. We know that we must lower those emissions. We know where the emissions come from. We know that most of us respond to the prices of things when we make consumer decisions. We know that the price of fossil fuels do not reflect its true cost to our environment and our health. We know that we can put a price on carbon and return the fees back to consumers to ease that hardship. We know that it would result in conservation and spur ingenuity and innovation. We know what we must do but the political will in Massachusetts has been lacking in.

A Yes to Question 5, a non-binding resolution, simply asks the representative of the ballot district to introduce and vote for legislation that puts a fee on carbon and returns most of the proceeds in equitable ways to individuals as a cash-back dividend. Please do it!
