Last Saturday, about 60 kids and grown-ups were treated to a pancake breakfast and then a musical performance by Valley folk favorites The Nields, sisters Katryna and Nerissa.
In the first hour, everyone had a chance to greet each other, top their pancakes with assorted fruit and sit down for a late breakfast in the sunny Flywheel Arts Collective space at Easthampton's Old Town Hall. In the second hour, the duo packed in a baker's dozen of songs including a standard in which the audience imagines, and picks out a wardrobe for, a character named "Aikendrum" who wears different food as clothes — which Katryna duly drew onto a poster on stage.
The event, sponsored by the Easthampton Cultural Council, benefits the volunteer-run Flywheel as well as Hilltown Families, an education and engagement network for families living in the four counties of western Massachusetts. Near the end of the show, before a song about people who try to make their world better, Katryna asked if anyone knew a joke that could cheer up her sister, who needed a lift. But Nerissa cut in to say, "Actually, I got all cheered up by being with you guys and remembering that we live in such an amazing community — and that it's so full of love and connection and taking care of each other."
