NORTHAMPTON — Police said a woman dropped off a “pink pouch” she believed contained cremated ashes just before 7 p.m. on Monday.

The woman found the pouch near the intersection of West and Green streets, according to authorities.

Capt. John Cartledge said the pouch has been “tagged properly” in case anyone comes looking for the lost item. An image of the pouch also was posted on Craigslist in case the owner searches the website trying to track down the missing goods.

It is unclear what exactly is inside of the pouch.

A local funeral director who examined the Craigslist photograph at the Gazette’s request said the pouch could contain the ashen remains of a pet. Morgan Mitchell said the contents are too coarse-grained and too white to be the ashes of a person.
