SOUTH HADLEY — Northampton freshman Camille Richmond found silver linings at the Western Massachusetts Girls Individual Golf Championship.
She shot a 97, which tied for sixth at The Ledges Golf Club Friday. Richmond went out in 44 on the front nine and came back in 53 on holes 10-18.
“I was playing with seniors, so I thought I did alright. I would like to shoot better,” Richmond said.
She did birdie an early hole. Richmond hit the fairway on her first shot then dropped a wedge close to the pin and one-putted.
“That was something I was proud of myself for,” she said.
It was a learning experience for Richmond in her first sectional tournament. She played in the first group with Agawam seniors Angela Garvin and Alia Godek, and Longmeadow sophomore Connie Dai. Richmond has been playing the No. 1 position for Northampton’s boys golf team in 2018.
“I think I’m doing pretty well. I like it because it’s competition that’s a lot tougher,” Richmond said. “It makes you a stronger player.”
Garvin won the title with a 1-over 73. Godek finished second at 82, while Dai was third (89).
Belchertown senior Samantha Teschke shot a 112 to place 11th. She had a 55 on the front nine and 57 on the back.
“I did average for myself. It was harder out because the course was wet. That definitely didn’t help,” she said.
Hopkins Academy eighth-grader Taylor Barry was 12th with a 113.
